Follow Your Head

It has been said that the head is the most important thing in every stroke.  The head can be rightly be compared to a steering wheel in a car.  Just as a car follows the direction that the steering wheel turns, so too does the body follow the direction that the head turns.  Perhaps you’ve seen swimmers, commonly referred to as “head shifters,” who let their heads wobble around while swimming down the pool.  If you watch these swimmers closely, you’ll see that with every shift of the head comes a corresponding shift of body position, often resulting in a slight zig-zag motion down the pool.  We want to eliminate the zig-zag motion because it takes more time to get from Point A to Point B when we zig-zag.  Remember what your math teacher once told you – the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.  So let’s swim along a straight line and enjoy going FASTER by swimming SMARTER.  Here we go…
